You'd be forgiven for not recognizing the name Alpha. The company first made a splash back in March when it launched the 14-inch Litebook laptop running Elementary OS on a quad-core Intel Celeron and 4GB of RAM for $249. Now Alpha is back with two more products, one of which is a Coe i7 laptop.
Liliputing brought to our attention a new post on the Alpha Store blog. In it the company explains how it has revamped its website, refreshed its forums, and learned a lot over the past three months from selling the Litebook. Now it's back with the Centurion laptop and Litebox desktop PC, both of which also run Linux by using Elementary OS.
Lets' start with the Centurion laptop, which Alpha states is a performance machine. It's a 15.6-inch laptop using a 1080p display. Inside you'll find an Intel dual-core Core i7 (3517U) running at 1.9Ghz and jumping to 3GHz for Turbo Boost. The processor is complemented by 8GB of RAM and a choice between a 1TB hard drive, 480GB SSD, or 120GB SSD/1TB hard drive hybrid setup. There's no dedicated GPU, instead the Centurion relies on the Core i7's integrated HD Graphics 4000 processor.
While the Centurion isn't going to win any speed awards, you can't argue with the price. It costs $429 with a 1TB hard drive, rising to $529 with the hybrid drive, or $549 with the 480GB SSD.
If you'd prefer a Linux desktop PC instead of a laptop, Alpha would like you to consider the Litebox. It's a tiny machine offering either a quad-core 2GHz Celeron (J1900), 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive, or a dual-core 1.6GHz Core i5 (5200U), 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. The prices are $249 and $449 respectively.
The Litebook received generally favorable feedback with it mostly being compared to Chromebooks, only with more functionality available because it runs a flavor of Linux. We'll have to wait and see if the Centurion and Litebox are received just as well, but at these prices it would be hard to complain unless there's some serious shortcomings.
