Think the bad guys have a leg-up when being chased by a hybrid cop car? Perhaps not.

Ford just unveiled what it's calling the industry's first hybrid sedan with "full pursuit capabilities." That means it's been certified by police agencies "to be tough enough to handle police pursuits for longer periods at different speeds and over obstacles such as curbs and flooded intersections," Ford said.

The new Police Responder Hybrid Sedan has an Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor fed by a lithium-ion battery. It runs in battery-only mode up to 60 mph and has a secret weapon: the ability to automatically switch to "maximum performance — with the engine and battery working at peak acceleration levels — when needed," Ford said.

The automaker added that the new hybrid cop car, which will make its debut in New York and Los Angeles, will save police departments "thousands" in fuel costs. It can go an estimated 38 miles per gallon combined – twice that of today's Police Interceptor, which gets 18 mpg. According to Ford's math, that should add up to around $3,900 in fuel savings per vehicle.

The new Police Responder Hybrid Sedan will be available for pre-order this spring and is expected to arrive at police departments nationwide next summer. Ford said it currently sells 63 percent of all police vehicles in the US.

The vehicle is part of a $4.5 billion electric vehicle investment Ford announced in January. Ford says it has a couple more vehicles in the work as part of the effort: a second new hybrid police vehicle for North America, a new fully-electric small SUV coming by 2020, a hybrid-powered self-driving taxi that will be able to tote people around starting in 2021, and hybrid versions of the F-150 pickup and Mustang.
