If you wanted to create a mobile version of the very successful first-person shooter series Call of Duty, which developer would you choose to handle such an important property? How about a developer that made its name and money from match-three puzzle games?

According to Kotaku, that's exactly what publisher Activision Blizzard decided to do, handing responsibility for developing Call of Duty for mobile platforms to King. King is best known for Candy Crush Saga and a growing range of other mobile games ending with the word Saga.

Does this mean Call of Duty will be realized as a match-three puzzle game? That seems very unlikely as it would lead to huge disappointment for CoD fans eager to play their favorite shooter away from a PC or TV. It's much more likely King is being tapped for its experience in offering games with in-app purchases (IAP) and microtransactions, which is key to generating a lot of revenue on mobile.

Very little is known about what this Call of Duty mobile experience will end up being. It will be developed by a new King team located in Stockholm, with the goal being to "strive to transform the best console experience fans know and love, while also breaking new ground for mobile and redefining the genre."

There will apparently be a lot of prototypes made while they work out how to transfer the CoD experience, and collaboration is key. In other words, those experienced with working on the main Call of Duty PC and console games will have a lot of say in what works and more importantly, what doesn't.

So important is Call of Duty as an IP to Activision Blizzard I doubt we'll be seeing this mobile game any time soon. In fact, if it goes badly we'll never see it as they'd probably dump the project before releasing a sub-par mobile experience.
