The Apple rumor mills are constantly churning, but they appear to be gaining steam this week with reports of new iPad models being tested in the wild.

Four new iPad model numbers showed up in analytics data from mobile marketing firm Fiksu, TechCrunch reported on Monday. The Fiksu data originated from a handful of devices in the San Francisco Bay Area, suggesting that Apple engineers have been testing new iPads in public.

All of the new model numbers begin with "7," whereas current-generation iPads start with "6." All of them also were running unreleased versions of iOS—either iOS 10.3 or iOS 11, according to TechCrunch.

The Fiksu evidence backs up months of rumors from multiple analysts and industry insiders that have suggested Apple is planning to refresh its iPad lineup this spring, and possibly as soon as next week.

Respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, of KGI Securities, said as early as last summer that Cupertino is planning to release three new iPad models, which could include a 10.5-inch iPad Pro, a 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2, and a "low-cost" 9.7-inch model. In January, Kuo also predicted that Apple is working on a new bezel-free version sized between 10 and 10.5 inches, in between the standard 9.7-inch model and a little smaller than the iPad Pro.

MacRumors reported on Monday that the new iPads could be announced by March 24, citing "reputable supply chain analysts" who requested anonymity. Apple has remained customarily tight-lipped, and it hasn't invited the press to any launch events so far.

Just about the only thing we know for sure is that it's been a long time since a major iPad refresh. Other than some storage capacity and price adjustments last fall, it's been a year since the iPad Pro was updated and more than two years since the sixth-generation iPad Air 2 was unveiled.
