Capcom Bringing Monster Hunter to Nintendo Switch

So far, the Nintendo Switch is enjoying fantastic sales due to two key Nintendo properties making their way on to the platform. But while Zelda and Mario Kart have helped sell millions of Switch consoles, Nintendo needs popular franchises from third parties to keep the momentum going. And it just got that in the form of Monster Hunter from Capcom.

The Monster Hunter series is extremely popular in Capcom's home territory of Japan, but also worldwide, with the games backed up by anime, manga, card games, comics, and even a movie. The last game released in the west was Monster Hunter Generations on the 3DS, which sold 4.1 million units worldwide.

Since then, Generations received a major update and got re-released in Japan as Monster Hunter XX. And now Capcom and Nintendo have seen an opportunity. Rather than release XX on the 3DS in the US and across Europe, they are instead updating the game for a release on the Switch.

Capcom confirmed the port is happening via a new page added to its Japanese website, but doesn't go into specifics. However, we won't have to wait long for more details to appear as, according to Eurogamer, there's a Monster Hunter event being held in Japan this weekend where Capcom intends to reveal everything about the game.

As this is a 3DS game, the most obvious update is going to be to the graphics. The 3DS upper screen resolution is only 400-by-200 pixels. The Switch by contrast boasts a 1280-by-720 pixel display on the handheld and an increase to 900p resolution when hooked up to a TV. Beyond that, and just like happened with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we should expect all the DLC packs to be included by default.

There's no hint of a release date, but you can guarantee Nintendo put pressure on Capcom to get it ready for launch this year. As it's only really a graphical update, I wouldn't be surprised to see the game launch in time for the holiday season.
