Prefer 2D Zelda Games? Nintendo Switch May Get One

The most important game at launch for the Nintendo Switch is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It's a 3D game Wii U owners have been waiting years to play, and now seems likely to help the Switch burn through its launch hardware stock in record time. But anyone not excited about a 3D Zelda game will be happy to learn 2D Zelda titles may also be heading to the new hybrid console.

GameInformer recently interviewed Zelda series produce Eiji Aonuma, and broached the subject of what's going to happen to the Zelda handheld team once Switch launches.

The future of the 3DS is unclear right now. Nintendo wants the 3DS to co-exist alongside the Switch, but that co-existence seems to be tied to the 3DS catering to a younger audience. If the Switch proves extremely popular, it could even end up replacing the 3DS completely in the coming years. So what does that mean for Nintendo handheld teams, many of which contain a lot of experienced 2D game creators?

According to Aonuma, not much. For the Zelda handheld team specifically, they are not going to be merged with the Switch (Wii U) Zelda team. Aonuma explained to GameInformer, "The 3DS team and the Wii U team have different approaches to game development, so I don't necessarily want to combine them and have them think together ... The handheld development team will not be phased out because of Nintendo Switch."

It may be the case that Nintendo is still planning to make more Zelda games for the 3DS, but Aonuma also suggested that 2D Zelda games on Switch is "definitely a possibility."

While the Switch is a 1080p home console capable of producing large 3D worlds as seen in Breath of the Wild and the crisp 60fps action of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, nobody should rule out new 2D games heading to the platform. And if Nintendo believes 2D Zelda games will sell on Switch, which I'm sure no one doubts, it will definitely happen. As will 2D any-Nintendo-IP if the right idea presents itself.
