Ubisoft wants to entice more people to play its open world extreme sports game Steep, so from Friday until Monday the French publisher is allowing you to play it for free.

Developed by Ubisoft Annecy, Steep is an online multiplayer-focused game allowing players to explore the snow-covered mountains of the Alps and Alaska. Skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, and wingsuits all feature to keep you entertained. Rather than a typical video game with clear goals, Steep is set up as a playground for you to explore while attempting to perform the best tricks on your travels.

Here's 15 minutes of gameplay courtesy of IGN to give you a taste of what to expect:

The free play weekend is open to PC, PS4, and Xbox One owners. It begins at 8:01am on March 10 for Xbox One owners, with PC and PS4 owners having to wait until 6pm to start playing. The free weekend ends at 7:59am on March 13 for Xbox One and 6pm for PC and PS4.

Ubisoft will also offer a steep (sorry!) discount on the game from March 10 to March 21 for Xbox owners and until March 15 for PC/PS4 owners. On Xbox Live, you can pick up the Standard Edition for 50 percent off or the Gold Edition containing a Season Pass for 40 percent off. The PlayStation Network discount will be 44 percent for either version, and on PC the discount is 40 percent for either.

If you opt for the Gold Edition of the game, the three promised DLC packs are called the Winter Fest Pack, Extreme Pack, and Adrenaline Pack. Together they offer new challenges and costumes, rocket wings, base jumping, and speed gliding, and some unique night-time sporting action.

When opting to take advantage of any free weekend deal it's important to factor in the download time for a game. In the case of Steep, it's a 25GB download, which is relatively small considering we're used to seeing games with downloads regularly north of 50GB.
