Newegg Opens Site Dedicated to Crowd-Funded Tech

Newegg long ago moved beyond its geeky roots to sell baby furniture and dietary supplements alongside its bread and butter consumer electronics, but its latest expansion transcends categories to sell a collection of products with few ties to one another other than that they are all made by startups.

Well, not just any startups. Thanks to its recently-formed partnership with Indiegogo, Newegg is only featuring goods from companies who got their start on the crowdfunding site. Specifically, Newegg will highlight consumer tech gear from around 20 entrepreneurs and small businesses that have been the most successful recipients of the Newegg-Indiegogo incubator announced last summer.

Among them is CarVi, which makes a device intended to turn regular, dumb cars into smart ones. Part dash cam, part lane departure warning system, the CarVi's $299 retail price is among the most expensive items for sale in Newegg's startup category.

Many of the products sell for under $100, including mini dustbins for your kitchen cutting boards, a virtual reality headset, and a heads-up car navigation display.

"Crowdfunding entrepreneurs often find it challenging to build and ship products to their customers, and we're happy to lend our support to help them as they build their businesses," Newegg CEO Danny Lee said in a statement.

Highlighting products just because they're made by startups might sound like an odd approach for an Internet retail giant outside of the crowdfunding world, but Newegg has invested heavily in the idea, which it calls a natural fit for its "30 million registered customers who are tech enthusiasts and early adopters of innovative products."

Promising Indiegogo-funded companies that are selected to participate in the Newegg partnership receive limited-time discounted commission rates and free inventory storage, among other benefits.
