Self-driving cars are clearly on the horizon. They may have a lot more learning to do, many rules to adhere to, and a ton of regulations to pass, but they are coming. However, until the fully-autonomous self-driving car arrives we're going to see little bits of self-driving start appearing as features on new cars, and Audi is going to unveil one such feature next month.
On July 11, Audi is set to hold the Audi Summit in Barcelona. It is touted as an event to, "showcase pioneering solutions for the urban mobility of tomorrow – from premium mobility services to piloted driving and parking." The star of the show is expected to be a brand new version of the luxury sedan Audi A8, and it has a very clever parking assistant on board.
As the video above teases, the Audi A8 includes a new feature called AI remote parking pilot. It allows the driver to pull up at home, exit the car, and then press a button to have the car intelligently park itself. In this case it reverses into position under the house.

For now, that's all we know. The A8 can park itself, we just don't know how. There must be some combination of on-board computer and cameras to map and learn the area. I also imagine the driver needs to train the car so it knows what the owner means by "parked" and that will change per owner or even per driver. There's also the question of how many parking situations it can learn? I imagine home and work would be a minimum, but maybe the A8 is more intelligent than that.
All is expected to be revealed on July 11 in Barcelona. And where Audi goes others will follow, so expect similar ideas from Mercedes, BMW, etc.
