One of the major deterrents against attempting to rob a bank is the dye packs that can accompany the stolen cash. When they explode, they render the cash unusable and the thief permanently marked. Now the same idea is being applied to an object millions of women carry around on a daily basis: the handbag.
Handbags typically contain some highly-desirable objects for potential thieves including a smartphone and cash/card-filled purse. So they are regularly snatched never to be seen again. Malaysian company Ash Be Nimble, better known for its sportswear, decided to do something about the problem and came up with the Handbag Dyetonator.
The Dyetonator is an accessory that attaches to the side of a handbag and contains both a dye pack and smoke flare. It's GPS-enabled making it easy to track location and the dye and smoke can be activated with a text message. When that happens the dye pack detonates within five seconds and permanently marks everything it hits. The smoke flare also detonates and burns for 4 minutes. At that point the bag will probably be dropped and the thief will run.

In order for the Dyetonator to work it requires power. A full charge over USB takes two hours and then it can be relied upon to work for five days before a recharge is required. Five colors will be available (Champagne Gold, Sterling Silver, Mocha Brown, Rose Gold, and Jet Black) to help match a handbag.
According to Engadget, the Handbag Dyetonator was created by Ash Be Nimble in collaboration with advertising agency Ogilvy. It isn't available to purchase just yet, but you can sign up to be part of a trial when it is. If it's not too expensive, this could end up being a popular accessory.
