Never underestimate the power of your laptop: A witness to Friday's deadly shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport said his computer took a bullet for him.

"The backpack saved my life," Steve Frappier told CNN last week.

When Esteban Santiago opened fire in the baggage claim area at Terminal 2, Frappier ducked for cover, wearing his backpack on both shoulders "like a tortoise."

"At one point, when the shooter shot toward my direction [and] there was a bullet that ricocheted," he told CNN's Anderson Cooper.

Frappier said he "felt something hit my back," but thought it was just falling luggage. It was only later that he realized a bullet had entered his pack and hit his laptop.

"When I gave my bag over to the FBI for investigation, they found the bullet in the pocket of my backpack," Frappier said. "The way that it ricocheted and entered my bag, that would have been my back."

As seen in the image above, the bullet left a gaping hole in the MacBook, damaging its aluminum unibody chassis—and likely rendering it unusable. I doubt he'll think twice about buying another MacBook, though.

"The strange thing, too," Frappier told Cooper, "is that, in the rush to get off the plane, I just kind of shoved the laptop into my backpack, and it was just open very slightly.

"So later, when [the FBI] were searching the backpack, they were looking for the entrypoint. And it turns out it did just go through the open backpack, ran through the laptop and the casing, and then into an interior pocket of the backpack."

Five people were shot dead and eight wounded in the attack, according to CNN, which reported that Santiago was taken into custody "without incident."
