The home automation market is growing faster than ever, with an endless list of new tools and gadgets to prove it. In its 2017 report, the Consumer Technology Association predicted that smart homes would be the most popular category among Internet of Things engagement, bringing an anticipated 63% increase in sales. As we charge full speed into the new year, here are four smart home trends and technology advances that homeowners and tech-enthusiasts can expect to gain traction in 2017.

1. Growing Reliance on Home Security Systems

If you've yet to dip your toes into home security, look for a comprehensive home security system that provides motion sensors for doors and windows, video monitoring, and a connected app. There are dozens of security providers available, but Frontpoint, Link Interactive, and Protect America consistently perform at the top of their class with excellent customer service, equipment, and features.

But all of that is only the beginning—these security companies will likely only continue to exceed expectations as the renaissance of smart home technology continues to blossom. According to a Lowe's annual smart home survey, 62% of adults believe security is the most beneficial reason to own smart home devices. The surveyors predict that for this reason, home security will drive a significant number of new consumers to adopt smart home technology, which in turn will sprout competition and technological advancements galore.

2. Demand for Voice-Controlled Everything

We saw it at CES this year and in Coldwell Banker's 2017 Smart Home Marketplace Survey: consumers want voice-controlled smart home devices. According to Coldwell Banker's survey, 72% of those who have app-controlled smart home products want voice control, but only 48% of people who have smart home devices actually have voice-control capability.

In the coming year, you can expect the voice-controlled Amazon Echo and Amazon Echo Dot to remain popular. It will also be interesting to watch Google Home expand its integrations in an attempt to compete with Amazon. Both brands were present at CES this year, but we can likely expect to see the demand for voice-controlled technology and smart home hubs filled by other companies as well.

3. Continued Fascination with Virtual Reality

As wearable technology becomes increasingly mainstream, attention will shift to virtual reality (VR) hardware. After the successful release of Oculus Rift, thousands of VR games, apps, and videos were launched and 3D televisions have become more affordable. Given these advancements, it wouldn't be surprising if VR appeared in home theaters.

At CES 2017, the Giroptic iO made its debut. This device transforms iOS devices into a 360-degree streaming VR camera. Giroptic's other product, the 360cam, has three "ears" and three "eyes" so you can capture videos and photos that are VR-ready and directly compatible with every 360-degree player on any device. Although it may have been one of the first, don't expect Giroptic won't be the only company launching VR devices in 2017.

4. Advancements in the Gadgets We Love

The smart home is no longer a new concept—and with so many options available, consumers don't have to settle. For companies to stand out from the crowd, they'll have to adjust prices, enhance security to prevent cyberattacks, improve aesthetics, and continually add to their integrations and features list.

For example, even though there are dozens of smart locks on the market, Kwikset showcased its newest smart lock, Obsidian, at CES to great acclaim. Obsidian combines the brains of key-free technology with the beauty of a slim and modern lock. Kwikset claims it's the lowest-profile smart lock in the industry, a benefit that allows consumers to choose both brains and brawn.

Few things are more exciting than the prospect of enhanced technology continuing to improve our lives at home, whether that's our security, productivity, or daily living. Explore the newest trends set to hit the tech world and take note if they match up with these predictions—let us know if they do!
