First, this tip relies on a 3D Touch shortcut, so it won’t work if your device doesn’t have 3D Touch. You’ll need an iPhone 6S or newer to use it.

To set the intensity on your flashlight, first swipe up from the bottom edge of your device to access the Control Center. Along the bottom row, you will see up to four app buttons. You might have less, but here we have four (left to right): flashlight, timer, calculator, and camera.

Each of these app buttons has hidden functionality tucked away inside it. When you press and hold with 3D Touch, you access that functionality, such as here with the flashlight. 3D Touching it lets you set the intensity from low, medium, to high.

Once you’re set the intensity, iOS 10 will remember it for the next time you tap the flashlight on. You can always change it again if you need it brighter or dimmer.

While you’re perusing the Control Center’s newly acquired 3D Touch powers, check out some of the other functions. The timer button, for example, will let you quickly set a countdown from one of four preset durations.

The camera button gives you the ability to choose a mode without first opening the actual app. Need to record a video? A selfie? Just use 3D Touch and you’re good to go.

All these new functions are sure to please many users. The flashlight intensity function alone might make upgrading to iOS 10 a no-brainer (but obviously there are scads of other reasons as well).

It would be nice if these buttons were a bit more configurable, at least allowing users to change the timer durations, but we’re pleased to see 3D Touch really starting to come into its own.
