Firefox users have long had access to many useful context menu search extensions that allow you to select text on the page, and then search using any number of search engines via the context menu—and now you can do the same in Google Chrome.
Once you’ve installed the Context Menu Search extension, you can start selecting text on the page, and search using the built-in search engines, which include Bing, Bing Images, IMDB, Wikipedia, and Yahoo—if you’re wondering where Google is, you don’t actually need Google since that’s already included in the default Chrome context menu as long as you’ve set Google as your default search.
To customize the search engines to something else, you can head into Tools -> Extensions and find the Context Menu Search extension in the list. From there, click the Options link, and you’ll be taken to the settings page, where you can customize the list of search engines to whatever you’d like.
To add your own URL, just paste in a search results URL, and replace the search parameter in the URL with TESTSEARCH like you can see in the screenshot. For instance, if you wanted to search Google Images, you could add this:
http://www.google.com/images?q=TESTSEARCH
It’s a really useful extension that’s been a long time coming.
