Just as everyone was recovering from their new year hangover in early January, GPD, best known for their gaming handheld the GPD XD, revealed plans for a 7-inch Windows 10 laptop. It sounds too small, but then the mock-up images made it look usable. Now a video of a working prototype has been released, and it's looking quite impressive.

Anyone intrigued by the initial reveal of the GPD Pocket will also be pleased to know the spec has been improved with the addition of more RAM. Here's the updated version:

  • Windows 10 Home or Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
  • 1.6GHz Quad-core processor (Intel Atom x7-Z8700 expected)
  • 8GB RAM
  • 128GB internal storage
  • 1920-by-1200 7-inch IPS Gorilla Glass 3 touch-screen
  • 12-hour battery life (7,000mAh)
  • Weighs 480 grams
  • Measures 180-by-106-by-18.5mm

That jump from 4GB to 8GB RAM is certainly going to help with performance. The processor is currently unspecified beyond being quad-core and running at 1.6GHz, but the Atom x7 chip has been mentioned before by GDP.

The keys look to be a good size and well-spaced meaning "normal" typing could actually be possible on this laptop. How long you'd want to type on a keyboard that small looking at a 7-inch display is up for debate.

The Indiegogo campaign is offering the GPD Pocket for $399 with either Windows 10 or Ubuntu installed and delivery expected in June. After that, the price goes up to $599, which makes buying one now quite tempting simply to save $200.

On the other hand, buying now means you'll be receiving those first units and potentially encountering a few bugs because of it. If you can deal with that go right ahead. Everyone else, wait for version two with all the kinks worked out.
