A reliable source is predicting that Sony will launch a PlayStation 5 before the end of 2018.
That prediction comes from Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Thong has a better-than-decent track record with this kind of thing. He accurately predicted the PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 4 Slim before they were released.
Now, according to the WSJ, Thong expects "Sony to release its next-generation PlayStation by the second half of 2018." Keep in mind that Sony has not made any announcements about this, so for now it remains a rumor, but one backed by an analyst who's been right before.

Here's the thing: as Tom's Guide pointed out, Sony doesn't need to launch a PlayStation 5 — even if Microsoft's upcoming Project Scorpio does well.
