If you want to gauge how well things are going for the two main rivals in the games console market, you only need look at what they are talking about this week. Microsoft is focusing on how great the Project Scorpio development kit is while Sony is keen to discuss how well its PlayStation hardware is selling. And it's hard to argue the fact it is selling extremely well.

Speaking with Time, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America Shawn Layden confirmed that over one million PlayStation VR units have now sold. PS4 is about to surpass 60 million units sold (not shipped), and one in five PS4 sales is a PS4 Pro. If that wasn't impressive enough, Layden claims the PS4 is selling at a ratio of two-to-one in North America and three-to-one across Europe when compared to Xbox.

While I'm sure Sony would love more PS4 Pro sales, it's PSVR where the numbers could actually be much higher. The problem for Sony is it can't make them fast enough and "it's been sold out from day one." PS Vita was also mentioned, with Layden saying it is still a viable platform, but admitting only in Japan. In western markets it "just didn't reach critical mass." And if the current popularity of the Switch makes you believe Sony is now considering a Vita 2, think again, a successor is not on the cards.

The success of any PlayStation console will always be compared to the PS2, which over its lifetime sold 150 million units. The PS4 has some way to go to get anywhere near that, but Layden is already talking about hitting 100 million. The PS2 took 12 years to reach the 150 million sales total, while the PS4 has been on sale for less than four years and is expected to have a 10 year lifetime. So it certainly could reach the 150 million mark, it all depends on the games, what happens with Project Scorpio, and how much of a market Nintendo ultimately grabs with the Switch.
