With its new Moto E4, Motorola is out to prove that you don't need to spend Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy S8 money to get a phone with a quad-core processor and the latest version of Android (Nougat 7.1).

The 5-inch Moto E4 goes on sale this month for $129, accompanied by its larger cousin, the 5.5-inch $179 Moto E4 Plus. Those prices are lower than the activation fees for many new family wireless plans, not to mention lower than much of the budget and midrange competition. So as you'd expect, the phones come with a few caveats.

Yes, there's a quad-core processor and a 4G modem, which is more than enough to check your email on the go or navigate with Google Maps. Just don't expect cutting-edge features like gigabit LTE or compatibility with Motorola's Moto Mod accessories, and be prepared to deal with the occasional sluggish app.

The Moto E4 Plus's battery is a respectable 5000mAh, which is better than the 3000mAh battery that powers the competing midrange Huawei Honor 8. Motorola says it should go up to two days without recharging under typical use scenarios. The Moto E4, however, comes with a 2800mAh battery, which means you'll likely need to find a plug before the end of the day if you're planning on taking advantage of your unlimited data plan to stream videos.

A Snapdragon 425 processor powers the Moto E4, while the Moto E4 Plus comes with a Snapdragon 427. Both processors run at 1.6GHz, and are coupled with 2GB of memory and 16GB of internal storage. Camera options include an 8MP rear shooter on the Moto E4, or a 13MP one on the Moto E4 Plus, which can also shoot 720p video. Both models have 5MP front cameras.

As for carriers, you'll have your choice in the US and abroad thanks to support for both GSM and CDMA networks. The Moto E4 comes in Licorice Black or Fine Gold, while you can chose from Iron Gray or Fine Gold for the E4 Plus.
