Ntechlab's impressive algorithm can be used for quite a few things, but maybe none more important than their latest release. In the midst of what are quite possibly the most controversial elections of all time, why not take a breather to see which hated political candidate you look more like.
As Ntechlab's founder tells DigitalTrends, "FaceElections 2016 is a project designed to give everyone the opportunity to compare their face to the faces of the two main presidential candidates in America. We've got maybe the best algorithm in the world for facial recognition, and we thought it would be interesting to voters to be able to see the degree of similarity they share, expressed as a number."
Ntechlab's algorithm obviously has plenty of real world applications. Multiple companies and countries have shown interest in it, and it currently being used in Ntechlab's FindFace app. Basically, the app lets you find people on Russia's largest social network, VK.
Take a picture of a person, upload it to FindFace and if that person uses VK, there is about a 70% chance the app will identify the correct profile. Even if it doesn't get it exactly right, FindFace also provides alternate profiles it believes it could be, meaning those accuracy numbers are most likely a bit higher in reality.
They first gained worldwide interest after beating out Google at the MegaFace Competition in 2015 in the facial recognition category. In a database of 1 million pictures, FindFace was able to identify the correct person 73% of the time. When that database number dropped to 10,000 images, that accuracy rose to right under 94%.
While we could talk about the implications of a software that can be used by governments and private companies to target or identify people, let's bury our heads in the sand a bit longer and just have fun with FaceElections 2016.
Auto-Hide Your Cluttered Firefox Status Bar Items
One of the reasons that I love Firefox is the dozens of extensions that I have installed to customize the browser, but it seems like every extension includes another icon or widget, and by this point the status bar looks like an instrument panel… so how can I make them hide until I need them?
