We've been waiting for self-driving cars to hit the market ever since Tesla teased us with them a few years ago. Today, this advanced technology is finally getting into the hands of consumers. At this point, most of the self-driving cars behave more like computer-assisted driving. They're capable of navigating through most situations, but they're restricted by both technology and the law. Because of these restrictions, the cars need to be outfitted with manual controls and have a driver who is ready to take over at all times.

But the technology to make these vehicles completely autonomous is already being tested by silicon valley giants. Just a few days ago California announced that they would allow these vehicles to be tested on public roads. At this rate, it may only be a few years before we're being driven around by computers. When this happens, our lives will change in 5 major ways.

On Demand Transportation
Between Uber, ZipCar, and other transportation services, there are a number of ways that consumers can get access to a vehicle, even if they don't own one themselves. Autonomous vehicles will make these services cheaper and more readily available than ever before. Just think about how many buses and taxis are sitting dormant, while their staff is off shift. Once these vehicles are autonomous, computers will be able to rapidly respond to the needs of any clients. Imagine bus schedules that supported additional transport during peak times. Or having the ability to summon a vehicle in minutes with the touch of a button. Autonomous vehicles will make all of this possible.

Faster Transport
When we're driving, it's essential that we keep a bit of distance between ourselves and the drivers we share the road with. At all times, we need to travel slowly enough that we can respond to any unexpected hazards we'll encounter. Computers can respond to these kinds of issues almost immediately, allowing them to travel much faster in average conditions.

A Cleaner Environment
With every major manufacturer selling their own electric vehicle, it's obvious that this technology is ready for prime-time. As soon as autonomous vehicles are ready for public use, service providers will likely be going all-electric. With a large enough fleet, it's cost effective enough for companies to install a network of charging stations. At this point, our reliance on fossil fuels will be greatly reduced. Until tesla develops their new battery, gas will only be required for intercity transport.

An Entertaining Ride
Spending a long time on the road can get a little boring. Sure, we have the radio. But there are much better things we could be doing with our time. Some of the prototype autonomous cars we've seen have included plenty of high-tech ways to keep us entertained. 4K televisions with surround sound, internet access, and even some basic gym equipment built into the back seats.

Once these cars hit the market, driving will be a completely different experience. We'll be able to connect in real time with our friends online or enjoy the company of the people we're traveling with. Next time you're stuck in a traffic jam, rest assured that these days will soon be over.
