It's still the case that a reliable connection to the Internet for your smartphone can't be guaranteed. Coverage simply isn't good enough. It's also the case that when browsing on the go you come across articles worth reading, but not right now. So Google decided to kill two birds with one stone last year by introducing webpage downloads in Chrome on Android. Now the download feature is being improved.

Google announced the improvements via the Google Blog. They are a response to how popular the feature has turned out to be, with over 45 million webpages downloaded ever single week for viewing offline. Now that process should be easier and more intuitive.

To make a webpage available offline, Chrome users now simply have to long press on any link. That will pop up four options, one of which is "Download link." The same option is also available when long pressing an article suggestion on the new tab page.

"Download Page Later" is also being introduced. If you see the Chrome offline dinosaur appear there will be an option to download the page you were attempting to load automatically when your device is back online again. Depending on the size of the page and the speed of your connection, it should be available to read offline within a few minutes of regaining access.

Finally, there's a new offline badge. When a new tab is opened a list of downloaded articles will be visible, with those available offline having the badge present. That way, even when there is no connection available Chrome will present you with a clear list of what content is still available to view on your device.

The improvements are already available in the latest version of Chrome on Android available through the Google Play store. Chrome 58 also includes a range of bug fixes and performance improvements, easier viewing and clearing of browsing data, the ability to view and manage in-progress downloads on the Downloads page, and long-press link opening in a new Chrome tab.
