It's hard to believe we're only three months on from the launch of the Switch, which is well on its way to selling three million units. Demand is so high Nintendo can't manufacture the hybrid console fast enough. At the same time, it needs to continue fixing bugs and improving the user experience, so yesterday Switch System Update v3.0.0. was released, and it's packed full of improvements.

First of all, on the stability front there's two welcome fixes. The first solves a problem where software updates would simply fail to happen and then the software would fail to start. That should no longer happen. The other problem resolved is the unintended HDMI input change when the Switch is docked in Sleep Mode. With certain models of TV the input would randomly change. That's fixed now.

As for the improvements, there's 12 in total and a number of them are worth highlighting.

Once v3.0.0 is installed you'll be able to add friends from your 3DS and Wii U Friend Lists. Nintendo also added a new notification for when friends come online.

There's some nice controller feature updates. It's now possible to locate a paired controller if it is in range by making it vibrate. Considering how small the Joy-Con controllers are, this is going to be very useful when one inevitably falls down the back of the sofa or gets kicked under a table. And if you didn't know, it's not just the Switch that has firmware to update, the controllers do to. Updates can now be applied by navigating to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers.

Another welcome controller update relates to the Pro Controller. Until now, connected or not the Pro Controller only communicated with the Switch wirelessly. However, this system update changes that to allow for wired communication when connected by the USB charging cable. This can be enabled by navigating to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Pro Controller Wired Communication.

The Switch also gets more intelligent with regards to storage space. If you're downloading software and the Switch detects there isn't enough space left it will suggest deleting data to make room. Finally, there's some volume control tweaks. You can now change the system volume from Quick Settings and lower the maximum volume for headphones or speakers connected to the audio jack.

Overall it's a very welcome update for the Switch that introduces a bunch of new and useful features while fixing a couple of annoying problems. Your Switch should automatically download the update and ask to apply it. Meanwhile you can read a detailed breakdown of exactly what the v3.0.0 update contains on Nintendo's support website.
