Nintendo is Aware of Joy-Con Connectivity Problems, But...

It became apparent last week that Nintendo may have a hardware problem to solve for the Switch. Specifically, the left Joy-Con controller can fail to connect, rendering games unplayable until the connection is established or a different controller, for example, the Switch Pro Controller, is used instead.

The problem looks to be the lack of a Bluetooth antenna wire, which when added seems to solve the connection problem as well as significantly increase the range of the Joy-Con. Now Nintendo is acknowledging there may be an issue, but it's early days to make any conclusions.

During a Time interview with Reggie Fils-Aimé, president and CEO of Nintendo of America, he was asked about connectivity issues. He responded by saying, "Specifically on Joy-Con syncing, all I can tell you is that we are aware of and have seen some of the reports. We're asking consumers a lot of questions."

For now, Nintendo isn't sure what the problem is, but wants to figure it out so is asking Switch owners experiencing problems to contact Nintendo Support. Fils-Aimé views this as "fact-finding mode" which will then lead to a response if the company believes one is necessary.

Ominously for anyone frustrated by repeated Joy-Con connectivity issues, Nintendo put out a statement separately stating, "The number [of Joy-Con replacement or repair requests received] is not significant, and is consistent with what we've seen for any new hardware we have launched."

Nintendo believes there is "no widespread technical problems," suggesting that the company doesn't believe there is a major fault, just isolated incidents. So it's up to the individual consumer to contact Nintendo support if they are experiencing a hardware problem.

On the matter of the dock scratching the Switch's display, Nintendo doesn't believe the problems exists. Fils-Aimé checked with Nintendo's event teams who have been using Switch repeatedly at hundreds of events and there was not one occurrence of screen scratching from docking/undocking. But again, Nintendo Support is available if you have a specific issue.
