With the Fall Creators Update coming in September, Microsoft will roll out a new app that can transform you photos and videos into something more cinematic. Called Story Remix, it uses Microsoft's Graph, basically a bot API that works across different Office platforms, to bring your audio, video and image content together "to create stories with a soundtrack, theme and cinematic transitions," Microsoft says.

In other words, it's like a fancier, smarter version of Google's Photo Assistant or the Magisto app (remember that?), but geared towards Windows 10 content. As a nod to the latest Creators Update, it can also pull in 3D objects from Paint 3D and other programs, or let you draw on your videos and photos using Window Ink.

Here's how it works: The interface puts an asset pane on the right, Explore, Create and Folders tabs up top, a playback window below -- like a simplified version of Final Cut Pro X and other video editing app. However, rather than using frames, video clips and photos are shown as thumbnails with the length in seconds and frames superimposed.

From there, you just drag clips around to reorder them, or grab the head and tail to change the length, again, like most other editing apps. You can add text, filters, soundtracks and more via tools.

While relatively simple, Story Remix goes beyond other editing systems in some ways. Its main trick is machine learning, which it uses to analyze what's in your photos and videos. Using that information, it can automatically edit media, add a soundtrack, lay in transitions and give you a final edit with hardly any effort on your part. If you don't like it the first time, you simply hit the "remix" button and it can completely change the style and tone of your piece.
