Microsoft plans to officially announce Project Scorpio, the company's newest Xbox console, at the E3 convention in June.

"We designed Project Scorpio to be the best console to play the blockbuster multiplatform games from our publishing partners, made it easy for recently released titles to upgrade to true 4K and for beloved, backward compatible titles to play better than ever before," Xbox head Phil Spencer wrote in a blog post on Thursday.

Spencer in the post confirmed that the Xbox team will unveil Project Scorpio at E3. Microsoft has scheduled an Xbox press conference for June 11, at which we'll hopefully learn pricing, availability, and the official name for the new console.

The next-generation console has attracted keen interest from living-room gamers for its spec sheet, which Eurogamer revealed last week. Its marquee feature is support for 4K games, made possible by some impressive components: an 8-core custom AMD processor with a 2.35GHz clock speed, a 40-core GPU with a 1,172MHz clock speed, and a whopping 12GB of GDDR5 RAM with 326GBps memory bandwidth. It's also equipped with a 1TB hard drive and an Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drive.

Despite Spencer's promise of "true 4K," the actual resolutions you'll experience on the Project Scorpio console will likely vary depending on whether or not the game you're playing has been optimized for the new hardware. Microsoft recognizes that, and has beefed up its support for developers, with new initiatives like the Xbox Live Creators Program and the Xbox One development kit.

"The goal is to let creators focus their time and energy on bringing their game to life, and less of it on getting up and running on new hardware," Spencer wrote.
