Logitech Powerplay Means No More Wireless Mouse Charging

The wireless mouse hasn't really changed that much in recent years beyond incremental improvements. The battery life got longer, the precision got better, and the designs got more interesting and extravagant. What stayed the same is the need to charge them or change the batteries regularly. Today, Logitech removed that need.

Logitech introduced not one, but two new pieces of tech today. The first is Logitech G Powerplay, which is a wireless charging solution for mice. The second is Logitech G Lightspeed, which is a wireless connection with responsiveness Logitech claims is faster even than wired mice. Together, Logitech hopes to provide you with the ultimate gaming mouse experience.

As the video above explains, Powerplay removes the need to ever charge a wireless mouse because it is always receiving power. The mouse mat becomes the wired part of the equation. You'll need to use a compatible mouse, though, and on that front Logitech predictably delivered two new models: the G703 and G903.

The base spec of both mice is the same, offering Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 support, between 200-12,000dpi tracking, 50 million click-rated buttons, and a two-year warranty.

Where the G903 differs is by allowing for customization to better fit your hand, offering 11 instead of six programmable buttons, offering the option of a wired connection, clock-tuning, mechanical pivot buttons, and programmable RGB lighting. That's why you'll pay $149.99 for the G903 compared to $99.99 for the G703.

As for Lightspeed, it promises one millisecond response times for these wireless mice. The Powerplay mouse mat uses a sensor with Lightspeed built in, so combining Powerplay with a G703 or G903 mouse should make for a great gaming experience. Of course, with the Powerplay system costing $99.99 on its own, you'll be paying out at least $200 to use it, or $250 if you want the G903. The Powerplay will be available in August, but you can pick up the G703 and G903 later this month.

Earlier this month Corsair showed off a Concept Zeus mouse that used a similar system. So while Logitech's solution is expensive, it likely won't stay that way for too long if other companies already have competing products. And if the latency is as low as Logitech states, then this could soon become the norm for wireless mice.
