Galaxy S8 Owners Complain of Red Display

The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are very important smartphones for Samsung due to the disaster that was the Galaxy Note 7. The S8 is viewed as an opportunity for Samsung to demonstrate it can produce a fault-free handset, and yet, it looks as though there is a problem. This time it isn't the battery, it's the much more visible display.

According the The Korea Herald, which shared the image you see below, consumers who preordered the S8 and S8 Plus in Korea have taken delivery of their new phones. But the complaints are already starting to appear regarding a reddish tint visible across the display.

Samsung was quick to respond to complaints and claims this is not a display fault. The company advises S8 owners experiencing the reddish tint to adjust the display settings on the phone. However, this apparently isn't working in all cases, so Samsung is allowing an exchange to happen at service centers.

As to the cause of the color balance problem, the culprit is thought to be 'deep red' OLEDs. Samsung uses two subpixels in the S8's OLED display, which break down to red-green and blue-green. So as to offset the potential color balance problem of too much green, Samsung strengthened the red color. The red tint suggests they overdid it.

Testing prior to the launch of the S8 suggested the display is the best you can buy. However, PhoneArena spoke to an industry analyst who suggested Samsung rushed production to meet demand and this is the negative result.

With the S8 and S8 Plus launching more widely in a couple of days, it could be a very stressful 48 hours for Samsung. Right now, the company claims it's a feature of the phone you can adjust, but if the complaints keep mounting it could force them to accept this is actually a problem they need to fix.
