Dragon Quest XI Gets a Very Unusual PS4 Controller

As gaming IP goes, Dragon Quest is huge. So popular are the games in its home country of Japan, it is classed as the national game. There's even an urban myth a law was passed in Japan banning the sale of new Dragon Quest games except on weekends and national holidays. Even so, DQ release dates typically fall on a Saturday.

So it may come as no surprise that the next iteration in the Dragon Quest series (Dragon Quest XI) is getting its own PS4 controller. And it's a very unusual game pad.

Only one image of the controller has been released so far, which you can see above sitting next to the character it is modeled on: a Slime. However, that Slime is actually just another angle of the same controller. Yes, this controller really is the shape of a Slime, with your fingers wrapping around its body and the buttons/thumb sticks on its base.

This isn't the first time a Dragon Quest game got its own controller, though. Square Enix did the same thing when the PlayStation 2 was Sony's focus. And that controller was also modeled on a Slime's body.

Here's the PS2 version to give you some idea of what to expect:

Both the PS2 and PS4 versions of this controller don't look particularly comfortable to use for playing a game, especially considering Dragon Quest games usually require at least 60 hours to play through.

There's a good chance most consumers buying this PS4 controller will never use it. That's down to the price as much as it is going to become a collector's item. According to Kotaku, when the Dragon Quest Controller for PlayStation 4 is released alongside the game on July 29 in Japan, it will cost 17,780 yen. That converts to around $160, which is more than double what you'd expect to pay for the actual game at full price!

Will we get the PS4 Slime controller in the US and Europe? I would be surprised if that happened, especially considering the price. What's more likely is a very limited Collector's Edition which could possibly include this controller.
