Microsoft is preparing to launch the hardware that could see it start to catch Sony and the PS4. But the Xbox One X alone won't solve that problem. Microsoft also needs games, and some of its most popular IP available as brand new titles. Halo doesn't look like it will be one of them, though, at least not this year.
We all expected Project Scorpio to be officially revealed and named at E3, but we also expected some big title announcements. One of those was the next entry in the Halo series. Nothing was leaked beforehand about a Halo 6 reveal, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise when it didn't get a mention.
Posting on the Halo Waypoint blog, 343 Industries lead writer Jeff Easterling acknowledged the disappointment of no Halo 6 news during the Xbox media briefing. He also prepared Halo fans for a long wait by saying, "it's been made clear that we won't be talking about Halo's next major title for quite some time. And no, that doesn't mean Gamescom. Or PAX. Trust us, when we're ready to begin pulling back that proverbial curtain, you'll know. It won't be soon."

Gamescom takes place in late August and PAX in early September. Typically the holiday season games are launched in late September right through to November. When a new Halo game is set to launch it is preceded by months of marketing build up. So I think it's quite safe to presume Halo 6 won't be launching in 2017. In fact, I doubt we'll see it until the second half of 2018 at the earliest.
Having Halo 6 as a launch title for the Xbox One X in November would have been great for sales, but then having Halo 6 available for the first anniversary of the One X next year is also going to be great. Buying an Xbox One X on launch day won't leave you without games to play thanks to all existing Xbox One games being compatible with the system (including a list of Xbox One X Enhanced Games) and the ever-growing list of backwards compatible games from previous hardware generations. Finally, we can't forget the generous Xbox Game Pass subscription.
