Whenever a big-budget superhero movie hits the theaters, it will undoubtedly be accompanied by a big-budget superhero console game, if not several. But why must the video game industry find inspiration exclusively amongst comic books, sci-fi films, and animated TV shows? There is so much untapped cultural fodder out there practically begging to be an interactive experience!

What about the video games based on teen romantic comedies, epic war tragedies, and 1980s sitcoms? Where are those video games? Hmmmm? Well, as it turns out, some of these games actually do exist.

For example, a new breed of indie developers has done what the billion-dollar industry refused to do and created unlicensed game adaptations based on non-traditional fare such as the 1991 tearjerker My Girl and the mediocre 1980s sitcom Perfect Strangers. While these modern browser-based adaptations were created with tongue secured firmly in cheek, unfathomable game adaptations have a rich and storied history.

In fact, the early consoles were riddled with all manner of bewildering adaptations as the still-developing industry launched well-meaning experiments to find out what kinds of content the gaming audience wanted.

A video game based on the TV series M*A*S*H? Sure. An action adventure game based on Home Improvement? Why wouldn't that be a game?! A Contra-style game based on the Oscar-winning war drama, Platoon? Bring it on!

Here, we delve into the weird history of unexpected video game adaptations. We do this not to mock or even to say that all these games aren't fun to play. Rather we would just like to show the industry that video games can be so much more than just zombies and aliens.

Think outside the box, people.
