GoPro's latest batch of action cameras, the Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session, both have some new tricks. There's a stabilization feature for recording video, voice commands like "GoPro, take a photo," and automatic backup.

Update the firmware

Before you will find the option to turn on auto-backup, you'll need to make sure the software on your GoPro camera is up to date. You can use the Quik desktop app, or the Capture app on your mobile device to update your camera. I had to go through the process twice on a Hero5 Black before I was prompted to sign up for GoPro Plus or enable wireless backup.

Once you've followed the instructions to connect your phone and GoPro camera, just follow the prompts to complete the update process.

Sign up for GoPro Plus

In order to use the backup feature, you'll first need to sign up for a GoPro Plus account. If you're an Android user, sign up through the GoPro Capture app to start a 60-day free trial. For iOS users, you should sign up through the GoPro website and not on your iOS device as Apple limits free trials to 30-days.

You can read more about what GoPro Plus is and does for you here.

Back it up

With the camera updated, and a GoPro Plus account active, you're ready to enable auto-upload. With your camera and phone still connected, tap the auto-upload icon (it's the cloud with an arrow pointing up) to start setup.

Follow the prompts, granting your camera access to your home Wi-Fi network and waiting for the app to communicate all of that important info to your camera.

Henceforth, your GoPro Hero5 camera will auto-upload any and all photos and videos to your GoPro Plus account as long as it's plugged in, fully charged and the microSD card in the camera has 3GB of free space. Presumably, this is to allow for videos to be converted on the camera from 4K to 1080p (the max resolution you can store in a GoPro Plus account).

The camera itself will show you its current progress, as well as give you the option to stop an upload if you should so desire.
