Amazon Prime is for many people a cool and useful service. For $99 a year, you enjoy a range of benefits, from free two-day shipping on most products to a vast lineup of streaming movies and TV shows via Amazon Video.

But what if you decide a Prime membership is no longer for you? Perhaps it's no longer in the budget, or maybe you just don't take advantage of its many features anymore. The time has come to say farewell to Prime.

First, let's just review the features offered by Prime. Beyond the free two-day shipping and Prime Video, Prime kicks in unlimited access to millions of songs via Prime Music, unlimited online photo storage through Prime Photos, a Kindle e-book lending library, free two-hour delivery on groceries and other items in certain cities, free one-hour delivery from many restaurants in certain cities, early access to special Lightning deals, free access to Audible audio series, and a host of other features. Sounds like quite a package.

And if you don't want all that, you can subscribe just to Prime Video for $8.99 a month. Plus, you can access your Prime videos and other content on your PC, mobile device, smart TV, or smart Blu-ray player. Amazon even offers a 30-day free trial to take Prime for a test drive.

Still want to put the kibosh on your account? Okay, let's go through the process for quitting Prime.

First, sign in at the Amazon website with your username and password. You can do this by hovering over the Account & Lists section in the upper-right corner and clicking on the Sign in button. After you log in, hover over the same section and click on the link for My Account. At the "Your Account" page, click on the link to "Manage Prime Membership."

The Manage Your Prime Membership page pops up. Assuming you're a fully paid member, click on the link to End Membership.

"Paid members who haven't used their benefits are eligible for a full refund," according to Amazon. "You can't receive a refund if any of the household members have placed an Amazon Prime eligible order."

Those who signed up for the free trial must discontinue the service otherwise their subscription will switch to a paid membership at the end of the trial period. If you're still on a 30-day free trial and want to cancel early, click the "Do not continue" link on the Manage Your Prime Membership page.

For paid members cancelling Prime, Amazon then flashes a page asking if you're sure you want to end your membership. If you are sure, then click the button to Continue to Cancel.

Amazon then tries one last-ditch effort to keep you onboard with another page asking you to consider switching to monthly payments. If you're still resolute in your quest to cancel, click on the End Membership button, and you'll finally sever the cord with your Prime account.
